Health status trends have paralleled the patterns of poverty over the years. Who is affected, where they live, and what their backstory all contributes to explaining changes in health as well as wealth. Children growing up in poverty are at a greater risk for negative outcomes such as poor academic achievement, school dropout, abuse and neglect, behavioral and socioemotional problems, physical health problems, and developmental delays.
